"But a man cannot remain indifferent to the world around him; it worries him and torments him to think that he could be happier somewhere else, and that he is where he is simply through a mistake of fate"

 Chingiz Aitmatov

***

I chose this Aitmatov quote as the starting point for this page because it resonates with many as a catalyst for change. It speaks to our restlessness when considering our place in the world and the possibility of finding greater fulfillment elsewhere. It's a reminder that we are not bound by fate to stay where we are, but rather, we have the agency to seek and create the change we desire. In making this video blog to contemplate and explore the theme of cooperative peace, I aim to inspire reflection and encourage a mindset of actively engaging with the world around us. After all, embracing the idea of cooperative peace means recognizing our interconnectedness and taking responsibility for shaping a better future.

From May to August 2024, I participated in an academic mobility program in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, organized by the CARSI project and the University of Coimbra. I focused on exploring the intersection of cooperativism and peace initiatives. This experience culminated in three distinct outputs that capture different aspects of this exploration:

The first product is a Policy Brief, published by the OSCE Academy, which presents an in-depth analysis of how cooperatives can act as mechanisms for local peacebuilding, particularly in Fergana Valley region. It connects theoretical insights with practical realities, offering strategies for fostering cooperation and stability in the region.

The second output is this video blog, which is a creative reflection of the preliminary stages leading up to the Policy Brief and ongoing potential academic articles. Through contemplative walking videos, this blog invites viewers to join a journey of reflection, exploring how cooperative efforts can contribute to peacebuilding from a local perspective. Each episode weaves together insights into Kyrgyz culture, history, and the cooperative movement, encouraging a deeper understanding of their interconnectedness.

Finally, a photographic exhibition complements this project - as a third product - by providing a visual representation of the observations and impressions gathered during this journey. The exhibition captures moments of reflection and contemplation, offering a more personal, visual perspective on the process that shaped the Policy Brief.

Together, these three outputs form a cohesive exploration of cooperative peace, inviting both academic and general audiences to reflect on the role of cooperatives in fostering unity, resilience, and coexistence.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
